A meme is a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc. that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by Internet users. The process of making memes is only allowed through Web 2.0 which is the second stage of development of the World Wide Web, characterized especially by the change from static web pages to dynamic or user-generated content and the growth of social media. By definition, memes have only been around as long as Web 2.0 as they can only be rapidly shared through Web 2.0. However, humorous images, videos, and pieces of text have been around for far longer than the invention of Web 2.0, lacking the ability to be shared so effectively. An example of a famous meme that has been widely shared and edited around the web is the “Dos Equis guy”. This meme allows people to edit captions using the humorous formula of “I don’t always ____, but when I do I _____” as said by the Dos Equis guy in the television advertisement. This meme became popular through various social media outlets as well as websites like IHasCheezburgers.com and reddit.com.
Because memes have become a pervasive part of the pop culture, they make for an effective advertisement strategy. Even before internet memes, marketers would try to make their own memes. If marketers can create a gag associated with their product, their product will remain in the spotlight and be more successful. This marketing strategy doesn’t need to involve creating a meme of your own – people can use a pre-existing meme’s popularity to be effective. Internet memes are phenomenons that more than likely won’t disappear from our society soon, they are a social bridge that makes connections between people who share similar interests.
In my experience, creating a meme is extremely easy and even easier to share with the world. I chose to edit the “Dos Equis guy” meme. Although it didn’t make much buzz, it did receive a few likes. I can certainly attribute the lack of attention to my poor methods of sharing. I did not use any social media or other websites like reddit.com to boost buzz on my meme.
